Mastering the art of storytelling is a crucial skill for fundraisers and anyone looking to make a meaningful impact in their work. When it comes to fundraising, it's not just about delivering a story or crafting a narrative arc - it's about understanding how to connect with people in an impactful and compelling way. In this edition, we will explore the different stories fundraisers can incorporate into their practice, drawing examples from various organizations and real-life scenarios.
The Origin Story
The first type of story we will delve into is the origin story. This is an opportunity to ignite passion and enthusiasm by sharing how an idea or organization came to be. Jonathan Johnson, the founder of Rooted School, often tells the origin story of his organization through the lens of a former student named Ricky. Unfortunately, Ricky passed, and his dreams of higher education were cut short. Johnson's work is deeply rooted in the perspective gained from this experience - the opportunity to continue Ricky's legacy and make education more accessible for underserved communities. Johnson's origin story is a powerful catalyst for inspiring others to join his cause.
Origin stories are not limited to organizations; they can also be applied to personal experiences. A popular TikTok trend involves interviewers asking couples about their origin story - how they met. Similarly, when crafting an origin story for an adventure or an idea, consider the following questions: What was the experience that disrupted your life? How did it lead to a new sense of purpose? What bold actions did you take as a result? How has this journey transformed you and your perspective on the world?
It's important to remember that humans are drawn to patterns, and the hero's journey is common. When preparing for a keynote or presentation, it's helpful to think about your hero's journey - how you arrived at your current position and why you are passionate about what you do. Reflect on the challenges you faced, the risks you took, and how these experiences have shaped your purpose and motivation.
When to use it
The origin story is particularly impactful in pitches for products or services with a significant social impact. By sharing your journey and the transformative power of your work, you can effectively engage potential supporters and stakeholders.
In the upcoming posts, we will explore three additional types of stories: the customer story, the industry story, and the venture growth story. Each of these stories plays a unique role in connecting with audiences and building a compelling narrative.
Storytelling is a powerful tool that fundraisers and individuals can use to captivate their audience and inspire action. By mastering the art of storytelling and incorporating different types of stories, fundraisers can effectively communicate their mission and connect with others on a deeper level. Stay tuned for the next edition, where we will explore the customer story in more detail.
